‘A place to fit in’
‘The elk to sustain’ - 20th October 2020
‘For me, a workplace was a place to fit in’.
This word was still the one I remember the most. Originally from Tokyo, she got a job at a hotel at the Tokyo head office as a new graduate but was transferred to work at a resort hotel built in this rural area of Hokkaido. It seems that not only her but also a few people from the head office were assigned to live up the hotel, but the hotel was already difficult to manage due to poor customer traffic.
Though having been initially a sales representative specialized in bridal, she was somehow sent to the accounting in a difficult state of management just because she came from the head office. It was already a fire truck with unpaid payments accumulated, and as soon as some money was put into the bank it had to be taken down immediately so that it would not be withdrawn. Under such circumstances, it was her job to distribute salary bags to employees. While grasping the family situation of each individual, giving priority to single mothers, if there is a working husband or wife, it may be a little late, etc. She needed a lot of mental concern. Her own salary was the last, and there were months when there was nothing left for herself.
‘How did you continue in such a situation? ‘
‘Well. When I thought about it now, it was obvious that it would not last. My bosses were also mentally exhausted, and they were yelling and taking out their frustration at us, but, even though they were such bosses, somehow I saw the softness in their weakness. I felt love for such a collective atmosphere.’
‘For me, a workplace was a place to fit in’.
‘What? A place to fit in? Felt love?’
I never thought that a workplace could be a place to fit in. But, after all, I wonder if it’s to do with a strong bond with people who worked with her. I wondered if it was because she had a hard time or because of the original quality, yet it was obvious that her affectionateness was reflected like a mirror around her.
Eventually, after going through the turmoil period of unemployment, she became an independent physiotherapist, running her studio herself.
