‘The falling leaves on the water surface’ - 11th October 2020
Even nobody knows I know how much you made efforts for the first baby step then another. Though the walks that you made might shape very different from others, nobody has any right to judge or define you.
Think of an elephant story. Some only remember his nose, some only remember his big ears, some only remember his fat short legs. If you show enough caring and opening up for the communication but if they don’t want to see your view, then leave.
They probably would see not you, but only a fracture of themselves the way they want to see it. If they don’t listen to you then it’s not about you. It is about them.
Perception. Some would only like to hang around with you when you are in a good shape and capable of giving. Giving their needs. Not your needs, but their needs. Only want to indulge themselves instead of asking how you are. This is a tricky point. The expectation of giving. Oddly just the same patterns as if auto-piloted. Then what would you do when you are in need of a bit of receiving instead of one way giving?
Or when your life is off-balanced? This is a tough one. People would start to show their true colors. It can be tough but please keep your eyes wide open. You would see who is a full circle of being conscious of good or bad (I am talking about your mental temperature, whatever shape you are at that time) without bringing their own ego on the table. Or, they might be only capable of showing their half-circle, as if their true intention is simply to satisfy their own ego by making you small. Then, you simply leave.
You gave them enough ‘giving’. Be wide open for their needs. Especially someone who was not there for you when you were going through tough times, but only want to come back around when you are ready with giving. Those are simply opportunists and amazingly they have similar traits in them. You would see who is sincerely caring for you around these tough times. At a certain life stage, we would be outgrown from those empty relationships.

‘Be the unconscious conscious #01’ - 11th October 2020
Serving for others? Or, being under a carpet? Under the social norm of the herd mentality (2/2)
On the other hand, a Russian woman who happened to meet after re-living in Sapporo recently. She came to Japan earlier this year and was unable to return to Japan due to this pandemic and she has been stranded for more than seven months. I could resonate with her through my own experience of being stuck for about three months in Manila. So I asked her if I could do something to support her and we decided to go to the Immigration Department asking if she could at least convert her current travel visa to a work visa. In such a situation, if she could work, even a little financial anxiety factor would disappear. Unfortunately, the results do not seem to be so easy to get a work permit on paper. 7 months is such a long period without any assistance.
With foreigners who were stranded like this woman, the immigration office was quite crowded. There was an Italian man and a Japanese woman who happened to be there. The Japanese woman didn’t speak English at all, and all their conversations were done with an iPhone voice! I’m very ignorant of these apps, so I could see the future there. It seems that the Japanese young woman found the Italian man raising his hand to hitchhike on a rural road in the suburbs, so she picked up him in a car, and let him stay at home since then. Are you sure that you feel comfortable letting him stay at your place? I suddenly became an alert. When I lived in London, I had an unpleasant experience trying to help others in a similar situation ending up screwing my life greatly, so I felt like I was shown the past ‘me’ in her. Then, for some reason, I became sick in my heart. Why life is showing me another exploited naivety in front of my eyes? What came to my mind was the words of an American who had lived in Sapporo for about 20 years. ` Japan is such a peaceful country and people are generally kind and caring but the problem is that you don’t seem to have a red flag ‘watch out for people who you associate with’ in your heads.’
‘Equal giving and receiving are important for human relationships.’ People would say. There are many things that make me think about this pandemic this year. It may be because of this situation that it appears on the surface.
I felt like I saw a contrast between indifference and compassion.

‘The herd mentality’ - 10th October 2020
Personally, I sometimes wonder if the current phenomena of the polarisation have to do with the indifference.
This is a story I heard when I recently returned to Japan from the Philippines and stayed at my parents’ house for a while.
This story happened in a small town next to the city where my parents retired and lived. The first people to get infected with the coronavirus in this small rural town were a little girl who is still at the age of attending a kindergarten and her mother. It’s a rural area, so it’s like everyone knows what kind of people live around. The rumor spread quickly, and even after recovering, it seems that everyone managed to avoid any contact with this little girl and her mother. Perhaps the parent and the child felt hard to live in, they moved to a place no one knew and simply disappeared.
When I told this story to an acquaintance living in Sapporo from the rural city, ‘Yes, I understand the response of the typical rural people. It’s hard for me to go home now. If somebody would see me parking with the Sapporo car number at my parents, it might influence the reputation of my parents. so I can not go home now.’
‘Eh? It’s not the fault of anyone, and we don’t even know who actually are infected really anymore, so it is not one way of dealing.‘ I thought.
